Fall, How Do I Love Thee?
November 4th, 2006
It’s really starting to feel like fall outside. I, for one, am so thankful that the super warm temperatures of the summer are pretty much long gone now. Fall is, hands down, my favorite season.
Let me count the ways:
The Leaves
That’s an obvious one, but this year the leaves seem to be extra beautiful outside. Too bad we’re not that beautiful when we die.
The Smells
Something about the smell of the heater coming on in the morning is pretty high on my list of favorite things about the cooler weather. Also, campfires & the crisp smell of the air in the morning can’t be beat.
The Clothes
I just like fall/winter ‘fashion’ better than their spring/summer counterparts. People tend to look better with nice sweaters and jeans on vs. ratty shorts and whatnot.
Sports
Between the World Series, Football, Hockey and Basketball, it’s truly the best season if you’re a sports fan. Me - all I really care about is football.
The Sense of Renewal
I think it’s the fact that I’ve been moving to a new place every year or starting new classes each fall - but fall always gives me this feeling of a ‘fresh’ start. I’m sure this will begin to change over time as I settle into living in one place and one job for a longer period of time, but that feeling is still there for now.
The Holidays
The holidays are nearing, and I love me some Thanksgiving/Christmas.

Give me summer any day of the week.

If I had my way, I’d live somewhere farther north of here so I’d get MORE fall and winter and LESS summer. I like shorts/t-shirts and all that good stuff, but I’m done with it by August.

I agree, fall is the best season. 6 months of 90+ degrees gets old fast.

This is one nice thing about Seattle, the summers are very bearable (85 would be considered sweltering), and we have fall pretty much the rest of the year. Snow up in the mountains for the winter sports lovers, but not here in the city. Haha, surprisingly, while it does rain a lot, I’ve gotten used to it already. It’s rarely a hard rain, just a constant drizzle.
In other news, I now work for a tugboat company called Western Towboat (www.westerntowboat.com). I have been on a boat for the last month on my way up to Alaska and down to San Francisco. I saw the Pacific for the first time just northwest of Juneau, AK (it’s all inside waters from Seattle up to there, so you never actually hit the Pacific until you continue north). I also saw California for the very first time as I passed beneath the Golden Gate Bridge.

Hey man - glad to hear you’re doing well. Sounds like the sailor life isn’t too shabby!
I’m seriously considering moving to Seattle in the near-ish future (something in the 1+ year range from now), but who knows.
From all the stats I’ve read, as far as inches go, Orlando, New York and even Atlanta I believe get more rain, it’s just, like you said a different type of rain in Seattle. It’s cloudy and misty most of the time but nothing too bad. And when the sun is out, it’s breathtaking.

Housing prices may drop in the coming year, as the market is already starting to show weakness (which would be good for you). If you have a good job and don’t mind the cloudiness, Seattle is not too bad. I guess the place is growing on me. The people seemed very different at first and it took quite a few months for me to warm up to them. There are a lot of places in the city that I think appeal to younger people more than people our age; I consider the places seedy, but for a younger person I could see how certain areas would be enticing. If you do move here, find a good neighborhood to live in, because this makes a big difference (steer clear of the U-district unless you like homelessness, vandalism, and guys wearing skirts).
Oddly enough, I might be moving to Bellingham, WA next year. My girlfriend, Kathleen, is thinking about transferring to Western Washington University which is located about an hour and a half north of Seattle up near the Canadian border. If she does, I will likely move with her. I’ll still be working here in Seattle though, I’ll just be living up there. But we’ll see, it’s not in stone yet.
