Last night I went to see I Heart Huckabees, and my oh my, this movie was quite possibly the best comedy of the year (at least, in this guy’s opinion). And yes, I found it funnier than even Napoleon Dynamite. I Heart Huckabees (I’ll call it IHH) was directed by David O. Russell, of Three Kings fame. I figured that if IHH was half as well done and intelligent as that movie, I’d be in for a treat.
I was right. The film is a story that is very funny, and very … interesting. I’m sure a lot of people will find the plot to be fairly abstract, and perhaps a bit strange.
Jason Schwartzman is the lead character, and he plays Albert, the leader of Open Spaces (an enviromental protection type agency). Albert has a run in with a big corporation (Huckabees) and one of the corporate execs, Brad (Jude Law). Albert decides to hire a detective to look into some coincidences in his life, and this leads to him coming into contact with a slew of amazingly quirky characters. We meet Isabelle Huppert and Dustin Hoffman, who play the two detectives with very … special methods to solve the mysteries of Albert’s life. Mark Wahlberg makes an appearance as well, and in my opinion, steals the show.
He plays a very confrontational, newfound friend to Albert, Tommy. These two go on their own search for the meaning of some of Albert’s questions. My description of this film could never do it justice.
If you are a Wes Anderson fan, you will love this movie.
