Airbnb will build a new tech hub in Atlanta

From Protocol:

The company chose Atlanta for its future growth for one explicit reason: In order to meet its hiring goals for technical teams with a diverse range of perspectives, the company needed a location that produces diverse and creative talent and would continue to attract more. No other city could surpass Atlanta’s potential to do that, Chris Lehane, Airbnb’s senior vice president for global policy and communications, told Protocol.

The fallout from Covid-19 accelerating work from anywhere has a large number of California-based tech companies looking for other places to search for talent. Atlanta has a ton of ingredients – relatively low cost of living, good weather, good local talent pools and a very diverse workforce – that make it appealing to any company looking outside of SF for talent.

Killer Mike speaks about Atlanta protests

I’m so tired of seeing police officers murder black people.

Glad to hear Mike give a measured breakdown of how angry he is, but how we can change things without trashing Atlanta. I will say though, if we don’t give folks hope that we can change things by voting, we leave them with no other option but to burn things down.

Hackers can remotely steal fingerprints from Android phones

ZDNet, reporting on how Hackers can remotely steal fingerprints from Android phones:

The threat is for now confined mostly to Android devices that have fingerprint sensors, such as Samsung, Huawei, and HTC devices, which by volume remains low compared to iPhone shipments. But down the line by 2019, where it’s believed that at least half of all smartphone shipments will have a fingerprint sensor, the threat deepens.

and:

The researchers did not comment on which vendor is more secure than others. But, Zhang noted that Apple’s iPhone, which pioneered the modern fingerprint sensor, is “quite secure,” as it encrypts fingerprint data from the scanner.

The scary thing is that this isn’t exactly the sort of password you can change if things go wrong.

Walking to Lunch

November 21st, 2008 I was reading an interesting article today about the ‘Drive to Lunch Syndrome’, which basically states that most modern American cities are designed in a way that is so car-centric that something as simple as going to get a bite to eat – even if it’s right down the road – requires […]

January Notes and News

So where has Mr. Daniel Andrews been you ask A lot, actually. Most notably, I have found another new job that will hopefully be the last job change for quite some time. I’m really excited about the people I’m going to be working with, and the area it is located in is exactly where I hope to live in the near future (Midtown, at the corner of Monroe and 10th Street). Overlooking Piedmont Park is a pretty nice location, to be sure.

Anyway, I’ll be doing web/interactive design and hopefully it’ll be something I can stick with for a while. Like I said, if I end up living in Atlanta long term, that’s the area I’d like to end up in. Living and working in such close proximity would be nice. In other news, the quest to get back (or maybe just get) into shape is on. My goal is to run the Peachtree this July, so I need to get up to 6.2 miles before then.

After one week, I’ve run a total of 7 so I have a lot of work to do. Should be interesting to see how long this lasts… I sold my k750i and got a black RAZR – while I miss some of the features my old phone had, the RAZR seems to get much better reception, have longer battery life, and is smaller than I even imagined it would be. The camera isn’t as nice as the k750i, but it still turns out pretty good. Not too sure I like the interface of Motorola phones – very unintuitive and very unattractive – but I can’t argue with it’s form factor and reception. Bottom line, that’s what a phone is for.

I’m planning on attending An Event Apart on April 3, down at the 755 club in Atlanta. I don’t think I can pass up a chance to see Jeffrey Zeldman and Eric Meyer in the same room speaking about some great web related topics. Should be good stuff!

Fin

Well, I’m done with school, which hasn’t sunk in yet I guess. I went to a little graduation shindig last night that was rather fun, and it was interesting to kind of get an idea of what everyone had planned for the next few weeks (and seeing Dustin drunk was … special). A lot of […]

So I Made up My Mind

About moving back to Atlanta. I’ve decided to move to Georgia after graduation. I’m actually kind of excited about it. I wasn’t sure until recently what I wanted to do for sure, but a few job opportunities combined with a better cost of living, and the simple fact that I don’t like Orlando that much […]
